WHOEVER said “two heads are better than one” never lived on the North Shore, where, when it comes to muntic- ipal politics, excess is best. Fora population roughly the size | of Burnaby (39,000 in West Van; 75,000 in North Van ak (7 District; and 38,000 in North Van City) we apparently need ee three councils, three mayors and three municipal halls, Where bibliophiles need three different Jibrary cards to borrow books. Where smokers could potentially pulf away in one pub and be turned away a few blocks down the road. And where speeders smile for the radar camera in one stretch of highway and drive with impunity in another, Why not amalgamate the three municipalities into one, eliminating mountains of bureaucracy in the process? Most res- idents feel that Nerth and West Vancouver are too distinct to be united: that Deep Covers and Tiddiycovers have only a syilable in common. We asked you: “Should North Van City, North Van Distric’ and West Van amalgamate to form one municipality?” i re inquiring reporter Michael Douét NORTH SHORE DEMOGRAPHICS Horseshoe Bay Dundarave/Ambleside British Properties Norgate/Pemberton Heights 36% Capilano/Delbrook Highl Lower Lonsdale Central ‘and Upper Lonsd Lynn Vailey a YES NO 10% 81% 13% 85% 18% 15% 60% 48% 33% ate 31% 52% = 34% 33% ands 42% 44% DON’T KNOW opin 1% 2% 1% 1% Th 4% 5% 19% 13% 30% Dana Higgins North Vancouver 1 guess it's more expensive to have three but it'd be hard to generalize...
