AS of mid June, the
British Columbia
Transplant Society
(BCTS) had officially
registered 200,000 peo-
ple in the province’s
organ donor registry.

In October 1997, the
BCTS introduced a new con
puterized registry to record
the wishes of organ donors in
the province. This new reg-
istry replaces all previous ways
of recording one’s organ
donation wishes, including
through driver’s licences or
Care Cards.

The demand for organs far
outpaces the supply. Currently,
there are more than 550
British Columbians waiting for
life-saving or lite. enhancing
organs.

In an effort to. increase
organ donor rates, the BCTS,
and the provincial govern-
ment, recently introduced a
new initiative called “Universal
Referral and Training.”

Two provisions in the ini-
tiative include:
all B.C. hospitals will be

ignated requesters” will ensure
that all British Columbians are
given the opportunity to be
organ and tissue donors.

It is hoped the initiative
will boost organ donor rates.
