Dear Editor: am writing in response to the (June 21 News) article on Mr. Charles Haynes’ court action. Several issues are at hand for me here. I feel sorry for yet another teenager being caught up in the power-struggle issue of parents. Believe me, as a parent of teenagers 1 am well aware of the temptations and dangers living there. . _ Could it be that the son had difficul- ‘ties because he was following his par- ent's wishes rather than his own? .. If it is the parents who wish to edu- cate their child bilingually, then it is also the parents’ responsibility and not the public’s.to look after that. Where is the ‘sense of responsibility for one’s choices? _ What does it say about this individual Tired tirade Dear Editor: : -T ‘can’t : believe . that people are still rantin’ and tiradin’.about the Second: as well as the society he lives in if he finds support in the baby's cry to mother government for provision of all and everything and to make it better with a kiss of money? Especially for young people of 15 itis Critical that parents begin to lead them towards developing responsibility for themselves. Parents are still the most powerful example of how to be an adult. What standard of education is Mr. Haynes providing for his son in this tegard? We are looking at a youngster getting first-hand experience in how to blame others. From the newspaper's point of view, I question your intention on making this title-page material. Is it so that emotions are aroused within all those who like to remain stuck sahara nnn tovamietear assests n CF ada ility Heaith head lays" out board's mission | in the infantile blaming-game spreading like a disease through our socicty? My hope is that the effect be one of awaken- ing more and more people to experience the freedom of responsibility. | A final remark — not unrelated — to the paper's attitude generally: Several weeks. ago an article (title page again) appeared on students protesting the dis- missal of their teachers. Now these stu- denis took their stand, proclaimed their choices because they know that they have to live with the outcome .;. and in bold letters they were called ... kids (lit- erally, baby goats). To me it is an affront to their budding maturity and it behooves us to show them more respect. : Helga Schulte-Schroeer Norta Vancouver : 1 “his battle is not hiker versus biker /Narrows. ‘Bridge... it's. an y Older bridge that needed \to be..updated and ‘re- paved, There's nothing ill- timed ‘or poorly decided about it. Dear Editor: In your front page “Bikers bring forest trails" article (June_ 30), I brought: forth some local. residents’ con- ‘cems regarding the ecological impact of excessive mountain bike use on North Shore for- est habitat. Since then, the. story has been picked up by BCTV News and CBC Radio, and discussed amongst various community members. It is_ quickly becoming. clear. that some individuals see this as a - “hiker vs. biker” battle.’ ; '* Such an outlook is unnec- ._ essary and totally counterpro- ductive to all of our interests. ‘We have hundreds of perennials: Ge ‘in full bloom now. While I do object to new trails being hacked illegally through commonly ‘owned Jands with no public or municipal . consultation, 1 -have no problem with sharing existing trails with bikers. My concem lies with the fact that by the very nature of their tires, mountain bikes ‘have a detrimental impact on the forest floor. If they are ridden unthinkingly through the woods, stream banks can become eroded, exposed tree roots worn away,’ under- growth destroyed, and seedlings trammelled. - All of. these. factors will, over ‘the years, greatly influ. My hope is simply that riders will see the sense ‘of this and understand _ why sticking to designated trails is preferable to venturing off the beaten path. With an ever- growing. number of bikers using the forest, it is vital that this message get out now before any ecological damage becomes more obvious. i Peggy Trendell Whittaker | _North Vancouver ; WEST VANCOUVER #919 Park Royal South ' pat-as3t YANGOUY ER Dear Editor: I want to clarify a couple of points that were raised in an article that ran in the July 10 North Shore News regarding the regionaliza- tion of health care services on the North Shore. , The North Shore Health Board is referred to as a “local bureaucracy” and it was implied that we are expanding the number of administrative positions rather than streamlining the system. This is not the case; the opposite is true. As a result of amalgama- tions with the North Shore Health Board, two senior administrative ., positions have been deleted at Lions Gate Hospital and Cedar- view Lodge. In addition, several other management positions have been transferred to rd, be North Shore Health Board, including communications, finance and administrative support functions. The North Shore Health Board is also benefitting onded or “borrowed from the Ministry of Health and from health servicepd providers on the North Shore, rather than hiring new people. Further admin istrative efficiencies will be possible with future amal gamations and legal trans-f fers. ‘ The mission of the North Shore Health Board, ist maintain and: enhance‘ the health and. well- -being of everyone on the North Shore. We are cominitted to establishing a more efficient and _ cost-effective. health care system that is ‘more § responsive to local needs. ; This will be. achieved, through . an inclusive. ap= proach to. planning:an resource — allocation...:t involves community. een zations, . individuals ' TUNE-UP SPECIALISTS TUNE-UPS - FUEL SYSTEMS - porhiie hese TA 176 PEMBERTON AVE.
