Deep Cove resident on charity canoe trip CAPILANO COLLEGE: grad Frank Wolf is heading up the creek, paddle in hand. By Paul Dillon Contributing Writer The 24-year-old Deep Cove resi- dent and his travelling companion are well into a seven month, 9,200-kito- Inetre (5,704-mile) charity cance trip from Saint John, New Brunswick, to “Vancouver, It. is the first time anyone -has attempted a cross-country voyage of | this length in one shot. “Eve always loved canoeing, I'm an instructor, so this is sort of a dream come true.” Woif said during an inter- view outside the Parliament buildings in Ottawa recently. Wolf, Roman Rockliffe, 24, and their yellow, (6-metre) 20-foot canoe » Were an Odd sight,on the Hill. The modern-day voyageurs, sun- burnt and anxious to get back in the sawater, were waiting to meet Canadian Heritage Minister Marcel Dupuis, They had faxed the prime minister but he. was a no-show. "“*We don’t’ mind doing this; it’s an important: puirt of the trip, but the “machine can’t stop or we'll get iced - ‘in. before we: reach Vancouver,” “Rockliffe said. Rockliffe began organizing the journey, which began in the Bay of Fundy April 18, after experiencing ‘first-hand the devastating toll AIDS _ has taken in West Africa. « . “YE taught ‘English in Northern ~-Nigeria.a couple of years ago and “when; selasses began in September I had 84 students. By Apri! there were only 46 kids left. They'd ali died from AIDS,” he said. “I was living with that horror so | decided to do some- thing about it” ‘The goal of the C2C voyage is to raise $1 million for Photographers and Friends United Against AIDS, a charity which will donate the money to organizations that minister to women and children with the deadly virus. “So far the response has been pretty good,” Rockliffe said. “Some people are giving us cash along the way and others are putting it in a bank account. *Ve've also had a lot of sup- port from our sponsors.” A notoriously: private Montreal lawyer took ‘time out to discuss the finer points of their trip. “It was funny, we sat down for a cafeteria lunch with Pierre Trudeau while we were in Montreal,” said Wolf, who taught cross-country ski- ing. at Holiybum Ridge last winter. “We went up to his office and he pulled out the maps. He gave us some advice and we talked about a trip he’s . planned up north this summer, a river no one’s ever run before. He's in * amazing shape for a guy who's 7.” The pair face an uphill battle until they hit the Continental, Divide, ascending ‘through the Great Lakes, paddling upstream to Lake Winnipeg, across the Prairies | on- the Saskatchewan, before a backbreaking - 180-kiiometre (112-mile) portage to the Fraser River headwaters near Jasper. They ~ will have plenty of opportunities to practice hauling the load. The overland portions of the trip | account for appfoximately 800 kilo- / metres (496 miles) of the total. However, if Mountain Forest and ‘ove Forest are rezoned as parkland, the zoning for the private lots -will become legally non-conforming, he said.” “At a June 5 ‘council ‘meeting, Palmer had taken the unusual step of j requesting : that council ‘ask. for a } eport on the financial implications 0 of rezoning the urban reserves. He said hundreds of millions of | dollars are at’ stake if council rejects 2 development. Council did not ask for the report. Matergio also said a petition requesting the urban reserves remain parkland was misleading because the 10,600-signature : petition’ contained the names of 2,594 people. who do not live in North Vancouver District or City, ‘ The possible rezoning of the urban reserves wil] be the subject of a ; public hearing | in the fall. news briefs . t 1 ishes seized A .
