Cap College Singers ready for big festival FOUR CONCERTS in North Vancouver over the next two months have two things in common: a prize-winning * North Shore choir and the International Choral Kath- aumixw. 66 As with all such ventures, though, funds are needed to assist the group. 99 7” The International Choral Kathaumixw (pronounced “cu- thou-mew”) is a highly regarded international choral festival and comp+tition held in Powell River every two-years. This year it will be held from July 5-9 and involve approximately 30 invited choirs from all over the world. ‘ Capilano College Singers will be one of the participating choirs. Powel] River has built an incredibly successful and truly international choral festival. The College Singers has a his- tory of excellence, including being a national finalist in the presti- gious CBC Radio Choral Competition in both 1992 and 1994, Their wo major concerts each year are highlights of the choral season on the North Shore. Kathaumixw offers the Cap singers an exciting opportunity to hear other excellent choirs and spend time with singers from places as diverse as Uganda, Sweden and Taiwan. As with all such ventures, though, funds are needed to assist this group of students. Lars Kaario is both a well- known tenor soloist and the direc- tor of Capilano College Singers. His performing credits include many oratorios with choirs and orchestras throughout the province, lead roles in musical the- atre with most of the groups around Vancouver, and many spe- cially crafted vocal concerts for various producers. Capilano College Singers wiil give a performance of the music they will perform at Kathaumixw, on Sunday, July 3, at 8 p.m. at St. Andrews United Church, located at 1044 St. Georges Ave. Following Kathaumixw, several of the overseas choirs will tour the province. Capilano College choirs and St. Andrew’s wil sponsor two concerts on Monday, July 11, and Friday, July 15, both at & p.m. Countries represented will inchude Hungary, Philippines, Uganda and Sweden. Local school records song | THE GRADE 6 class from St. Anthony’s School in West Vancouver has recorded their original song, entitled Save, Save, Save for the Greater Vancouver Regional District’s (GVRD) envi- ronmental cassette. The song ‘aas written and per- formed by the students and their music teacher Evon Kawa. y ~ At ST. JOHN’S INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL we consistently guide our students toward success, not frustration.
