Spaying Dogs and Cats That Get Bitten

Q: I've heard that | should wait

| until my dog has a heat before |
get her spayed and I've also

heard that spaying will make her
fat. Are these facts true?

Dr. J: Should you delay spaying
— No! There are two reasons why
dogs should be spayed before
their first heat. First, if they don't
come into heat, they won't attract
males, they won't wander, and of
course, they won't become preg-
nant. Second, spaying can pre-
vent other diseases. Mammary
tumors (breast cancer) can be

female dogs spayed prior to their
first heat. As soon as the glands
develop in response to the hor-
monal changes of heat, the
chances of breast cancer
increase. Fifty percent of
unspayed bitches will succumb
to mammary cancer. Pyometra, a

‘| serious infection of the uterus, is
‘| also prevented by spaying.

Does spaying make dogs fat?

‘| No! They get fat for one reason

only ~ they consume too many

puppyhood (1-1.5 years old),
they require less food. If food
intake is not reduced as calorie
demands fail, the. dog will get fat.
Since dogs are spayed just
betore this time, many owners
like to blame the weight gain on
surgery!

Q: What should | do if my cat
gets bitten by another cat?

Dr. G: Bite wounds in cats have
a nasty habit of getting infected.
Contaminated cat teeth or claws
inject bacteria under the skin.
The initial wounds heal, Jeaving
the bacteria trapped beneath the
skin. A pocket of pus forms in
response to the growing organ-
isms. The resulting “abscess” is
most effectively treated by
putting the cat under an anes-
thetic to lance and drain the
infection.

To prevent wounds from
abscessing, cat owners should
keep wounds clean and pull off
scabs to encourage drainage.
The cat should also be put on
antibiotics as soon as possible.
