QUESTION: I have been reading your recent columns that deal with violence. Everyone seems to be a victim — including older people, children, teenagers, women, visible minorities — it feels overwhelming to me. I can understand why some people just want to ignore the issue. How can communities cope with all of these probiems? is there any hope for the victims of violence and do you think we can ever expect a change for the bet- ter? Answer: Violence in our com- munities certainly is a disturbing problem and there are no easy answers to solving it. As you have said, it is under- standable when people want to ig--” nore the issue, But ! think ‘you will agree that violence prevention - requires active participation by all of us. ; ; Here are some ideas. You can see that the problem of violence is related to many things. Like most issues, it must be ad- dressed at a few different levels. We can think about how to make things better as individuals, within our personal relationships and . families, in our neighbor- hoods and communities, and in the larger society, People who want to see social change have a wide variety of choices when deciding how to get involved. ‘Volunteering, taking part in neighborhood associations, donating money to groups that are working to end violence, writing lobby letters, and talking to elected officials are some of the options. The recent federai government Panel on Violence Against Women produced a study that includes a number of good ideas for com- munity and individual activities and action. We do know that violence tends to happen in isolation and it con- tinues because of secrecy. You have probably heard people talk- ing about ‘‘breaking the silence,” meaning that when we speak openly about the issue, it is less likely to have the same power. All of us are potential victims of violence. Staying involved in the community and creating or strengthening a circle of suppor- tive friends and family will help to ensure a safe and happy lifestyle. Loneliness and isolation, how- ever, seem to be a byproduct of modern life. There is a surprising number of peopic who may not have contact with another persor for days. Many North Shore community groups have programs to deal with the problem of isolation, such as volunteer telephone friends, shop- pers.and visitors, support groups, social outings for seniors, and recreation programs.
