Eight other invited participants
did not attend the two-hour
discussion group at the com-
munication company’s office on
East Esplanade.

Participants were asked to write
a “wish list” concerning improv-
ing transit. They were also asked:
to write about how business could
potentially gain from an improved
transit system,

The transit observations in-
cluded the following:

“ @ transit was good when going to
Vancouver, but not when going
across the North Shore;

 @ transit was often inconvenient;

The transit-improvement sug-
gestions included the following:
© strive for a slow change instead
of radical change in the use of
transit;
® try implementing shuttle buses
or taxi-type buses tied in. with
transit routes;
@ research where cars are going;
@ make it easier to buy bus tick-
ets;
@ increase the 1% commission
for the sale of transit tickets to
businesses;
@ implement an advertising cam-
paign to say it’s OK to use the
bus. This may include profiles of
people who use transit;
@ try to have services in com-
munities so people don’t have to
drive long distances;
@ point out the true costs of
driving cars including insurance,
parking, and car maintenance;
© try to change pcople’s mindset
from the “either/or? use of car
and bus to having it acceptable to
use both car and bus;
® have city planners design bike
routes before a demand so people
have an option of using them after
the routes are in place;
@ revise the whole transit system
and be aware of costs;
@ improve lighting on
routes;
@ have a transit week co-spon-
sored by businesses with reduced
fares and gifts such as newspapers
to “tempt”? non-transit users to
use mass transit;
® arrange informal meetings with
