934 - Friday, May 14, 1993 - North Shore News ran AUTOR OTIVE Motorcycle awareness leads to prevention of accidents and fatalities WHEN YOU'RE riding a motor- cycle, one of the greatest threats to your safety is the other vehicles sharing the road with you. That’s because about 70% of all motorcycle crashes involve another vehicle and, for motorcy- cle riders, the consequences of an accident are serious — three out of every four motorcycle crashes result in injury or death. In 1991, the most recent year for which figures are available, nearly 1,300 motorcyclists and their passengers were killed or in- jured, A number of those two-vehicle crashes occurred because the other driver failed to notice the motor- cyclist and did something to vio- late the cyclist’s right of way. A typical scenario involves a car or truck turning left at an in- tersection, directly into the path of a motorcyclist, so that there is little the cyclist can do to avoid a crash. Since the return of warm weather brings legions of motor- cyclists back onto the highways and roads of British Columbia, May has been designated Motorcycle Awareness Month to remind other drivers to start watching for motorcycles. There are several reasons why . drivers fail to see motorcycles: ® motorists are generally looking for other cars and trucks, not motorcycles. ® motorcycles have smaller pro- files than other vehicles on the road, making approaching motor- cyclists more difficult to see. @ the smaller profile also makes it more difficult for motorists to estimate the distance and speed of an oncoming motorcycle. However, for most drivers, the solution is simply greater awareness of the fact that they share the road with motorcyclists. After all, motorcycles aren’t really that difficult to see when you ex- pect them to be on the road with you, Other drivers should also realize that a motorcyclist’s riding pattern differs significantly from that of a car or truck. Traffic, weather and road conditions often require motorcyclists to respond different- ly than drivers of other vehicles, making their actions more dif- ficult to predict. Potholes, road debris, railway tracks or changes in the road sur- face can all make it necessary for the motorcyclist to suddenly change lane position. Wet road surfaces reduce motorcycle brak- ing and affect handling. Strong gusts of wind can move motor- cyclists across an entire lane. As a result, other motorists should expect cyclists to make sudden changes in position and direction and allow room in their driving for such actions. Baking, blintzes and bargains highlight of N.
