Fasting and prayer mark Jewish holy day YOM KIPPUR, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, beigns this -year on the evening of Tuesday, Oct. 6 and ends the evening of Wednesday, Oct. 7. Jews all over the world will be engrossed in meditation and prayer, while also undergoing a 25-hour fast of both food and water. Yom Kippur, which literally translates as ‘‘Day of Atone- ment,”’ is traditionally seen as the day that the Book of Providence is sealed for a year. It is the day that God is most receptive to - sincere repentance. Traditionally, the Yom Kippur liturgy deals with prayer, repen- tance and charity. Sages through the centuries have agreed that through engaging in prayer, repentance and charity, human beings manifest God’s grace on Earth The Hebrew word “‘tefilah,”’ usually translated as ‘‘prayer,”’ more accurately means 10 bind oneself with God. Central to the concept of teshuvah is the belief that people are basically good and that they can locate this goodness within themselves, and be refrestied by it. This is because one’s wealth is seen not as a possession but as a gift given in trust so that it can be shared and distributed in On Yom Kippur, these three concepts and deeds are stressed, because they demonstrate that God’s grace can manifest itself, along with His true desire for a good and sweet year for everyone. It's taken 5 years of planning to design and complete the new Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. The structure is cer- : tainly corisidered attractive from the outside but once inside it’s immediately obvious why the time spent on planning was so necessary. A huge 19'xI0' stained glass window depicting Lions Gate Bridge and the North Shore is a focal poine of the sanctuary. This piece of art encourages enormous amounts of light and colour to stream in from the world outside. The wood furnishings are also other than ordinary. Made from 1500 year old trees gathered from the Queen Pastor Don Johnson and the 19'x10’ stained glass work of art. Charlotte Islands, the Sitka Spruce was actually cut down during the second world war and left on the forest floor. Now these ancestral trees rest on a church floor made of aggregate stone. The stones were collected from the bottom of the Chilliwack River, washed for centuries by its mighty waters. Last Sunday the congregation, joined by many friends, dedicated this new sanctuary and church hall. This new facilicy permits the congregation to open its’ doors to community groups. You am invited to stop by the church to see this new facility. The church is open from 9:00 to 3:30 Monday to Friday.
