16 — Friday, May 17, 1991 - THE LYNN Valley Garden Club recently honored three members who were active in the’ original garden club which was formed in the 1920s. Astrid Fisher-Credo, Mollie Nye, and Lillian Speers were presented with honorary memberships in the new club which was revived in 1989. Lillian Speers remembers, with fond memories, the wonderful garden parties the club had at the Summerfield estate in upper Lynn Valley. While the members en- joyed tea and cakes, Mrs. Sum- merfield’s piano music would drift across the gardens from the open French windows. Mollie Nye recounts how, as a child attending the Lynn Valley School in the 1920s, she and many others paid 20 cents in the spring and were given six packages of vegetable and flower seeds. These were taken home and planted in 8 CULTURED MARBLE PRODUCTS FACTORY DIRECT Custom-made, best quality, lowest price and more... * Bathtub * sink * Shower Pan * Wall Surround * Threshold & Molding * accessory Our products meet or exceed CSA. requirements. A diary was to be kept recording planting, germina- tion, thinning, weeding and water- ing. At the end of the summer, judges toured all the children’s gardens and the winners were awarded prizes. Today, Nye is well-known for her unusual and exciting contribu- tions to the monthly meeting plant table. Highlights have included seed for Peruvian Blue Potatoes, brought to Lynn Valley by Chilean Indians working at the original sawmill, seed carefully preserved from the rhubarb patch of well-known Lynn Valley pio- neer, Walter Draycott, and cut- tings from a rhododendron pro- pagated four years ago from one of the originals on Grand Boule- vard. The original club met one afternoon per month. Each meeting featured a parlor show in Warmth that Fits! which the members and_ their children displayed their homegrown produce and flowers. It was a very social afternoon of setting up the displays, trading seeds, cuttings, and plants, and catching up on the local gardening gossip. This was followed by judging of entries, awarding of ribbons and cash prizes, and then, tea and home baked goodies. The elderly gentlemen of the club, who ne tonger had their own gardens but still attended all the meetings, were known to be the first at the hall, eagerly waiting to see what goodies were being brought in for sale at the home baking stall. The parlor shows carried on from March through October. It was only in the dead of winter that guest speakers were brought in. Today, the tradition of trading seeds and plants at the monthly meetings continues; however, there is now only one parlor show where members compete for prizes — the annual fall fair. Guest speakers are featured at every meeting and each spring there is a very popular plant sale open to the public. The 1991 sale will be heid on May 25 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Lynn Valley United Church. The summer event is either a tour of some of the members’ gardens representing a wide variety of site conditions, or a gala garden mae New World Style, Old World Craftsmanship. Funds raised by the club are us- ed to promote a love of gardening in the community. Recent dona- tions have included gifts to the District Library of the book “In A Canadian Garden’’ and two videos, ‘‘The Chelsea Flower Show” and ‘'The Gardens of Ex- bury." A cash gift was made to Capilano College to extend the horticulture library, and gardening gift. baskets were given to four seniors’ facilities in the District. The ctub always welcomes new members.
