Roca-Rey first came to
Vancouver for Expo ’86

unique. It can’t be compared to
the body.”

And unlike the great sculptors of
art history, who have concerned
themselves with unravelling the
mystery of man, Roca-Rey is
obsessed with the machine.

The machine, he believes, rep-
resents a major shift in human
evolution and is what distinguishes
man from the animals.

Next month, Roca-Rey will stage
a major exhibit of his work at the
Galeria del Banco Comercial in
Lima, Peru. He'll make the trek
home for the first time in four
years.

In 1987 he gave up a prestigous
job as director of the Oro det Peru
Museum of Lima, a private gallery
that houses one of the world’s
largest collections of Pre-Colum-
bian gold art and artifacts, to pur-
sue sculpture full-time. He says he
fell in love with Vancouver while
serving as deputy commissioner-
general of the Peruvian Pavilion at
Expo ‘86.

spends hours conducting meticu-
lous experiments with weights and
balances before creating highly-
detailed drawings that he uses as
blueprints for his forms.

On the way to his studio we pass

a large, brightly-painted, aero-
dynamic-inspired piece called the
Rain Fountain. As rain collects on
one side of the sculpture, the
weight of the water gradually pulls

the other side down to the ground.

Last November Roca-Rey had
about 15 pieces ready for exhib-
ition, but, unhappy with what he
had done, he destroyed more than
halt of them.

“He’s a perfectionist type of
person,” says his agent, Diane de
Saint Pierre.

What he wants to do next is ex-
periment with electronics and
create voice-activated or mov-
ement-activated sculptures, But
being the perfectionist he is,
Roca-Rey assures this doesn’t
mean he will become an inventor
of cheap gadgets.
