Nat King Cole Trio — Hit That Jive Jack, Decca/MCA Records 1990 Before Cole came to be one of America’s most beloved crooners, he was, given the evidence of this wonderful reissue, one heck of a scat-singing, rhythm-swinging jazz pianist. Hit That Jive Jack catches a young Cole on piano and vocals, Oscar Moore on guitar and Wesley Prince tying down the bot- tom end on bass. The 16 cuts on the digital reissue were recorded during 1940 and 1941. The spartan piano-guitar-bass configuration ensures the distinct instrumental voices speak clearly and are not lost in the crosstalk. Cole’s protean sentimental tendencies are previewed on two of the selections — Sweet Lorraine and This Will Make You Laugh. The balance of this release soars with sprightly jazz guitar picking, (Moore flew high in many maga- zine musician's polls during the 1540s) hip vocals and a light- hearted, jumped-up beat as best record review expressed with tunes including Stop! The Red Light’s On, Babs and / Like To Riff. Milli Vanilli — The Remix Album, Arista 1990 The beautiful boys took a big bashing last year following the runaway success of their debut album.
