NV District firefighters given top chowder honors NORTH VANCOUVER District firefighters are as happy as clams after being chosen the overall winners in the recent Clam Chowder Contest at Waterfront Park. “They were really hamming it up,’’ laughed organizer Rete McKay. ‘‘They were walking down to the North Van City Book Voyage _ comes to libraries BOOK VOYAGE, a project giving voice to millions of literacy learners around the world, is mak- ing stops at the West Vancouver Memorial Library from Aug. 20- 22 and North Vancouver City Library from Aug. 29-31. Book Voyage is a project of the Movement for Canadian Literacy and is sponsored world-wide by the United Nations. A series of books are travelling to local communities throughout the world, with literacy learners in- vited to fill the pages of a blank book, creating a collective voice to share with Canada and the world. The B.C. copy of the book will travel to Lower Mainland libraries courtesy of the Greater Vancouver Library Federation. The firefighters were awarded a trophy and gift certificates to Dino’s Restaurant. Winners of the Best Costume and Best Restaurant Chowder earned their prize in more ways than one. Sailor Hagar’s Pub were dressed as fishermen in sou’westers and boots. ‘'It was as hot as heck,’? McKay said of the sunny Sunday. ‘‘Their costumes must have been like a sauna.”’ North Shore News managing editor Timothy Renshaw, who was a judge in the Restaurant catego- ry, said the chowders were ‘‘of exemplary quality.”’ In total, 23 teams competed in three categories; Business, Restau- rant and Open. Prizes were awarded to the following winners, and certificates were given to those teams ihat achieved Honor- able Mention. In the Open category, the Evergreen Chapter of the Cana- dian Progressive Club won medals and gift certificates to the Cheshire Cheese Inn. Honorable Mention was awarded to the Clam Bellies. For winning the Restaurant cat- egory, Sailor Hagar’s Pub receiv- ed a medal and Lonsdale Quay Market gift certificates. The pub also received a certificate, Yic’s gift certificates and Lonsdale Quay shopping bags for winning Best Costume. Pemberton Station was awarded Honorabie Mention in the Restau- rant category, and the North Vancouver Arts Commission received Honorable Mention for Best Costume.
