side the house in summer. While
diverting the dryer air inside the
house in the winter months con-
serves energy, it can produce prob-
lems.

Diverting an electric dryer ex-
haust inside a house can increase
the humidity levels considerably.
The amount of humidity produced
by the dryer will be directly related
to the number of times the dryer is
used, and the amount of clothes
that are dried.

A family consisting of two or
three small children may produce
three to four times as much hu-
midity through drying clothes,
than a two-member family.

However, humidity is not the
only problem; there are others.
Experts are now telling us that res-
idue of soap which often contains
phosphates, and residve trom
fabric softeners and bleach, as well

new bettery in a smoke detector at the home of a local senior citizen.
As part of their fire prevention program, North Vancouver City
firefighters will supply fresh batteries and install them for seniors who
have difficulty managing the task themselves.

The finer the material the faster
it rots. You should try to shred
coarser stalks and stems before
adding them to the pile. For the
same reason, use the lawn mower
to shred leaves and, if you have a
good mower, it will pick up most
of the leaves for you.

To achieve the best results, put a
two-inch layer of soil on top of
every eight inches of packed com-
postable material. The addition of
a sprinkling of high nitrogen fert-
tilizer will speed up the process. I
prefer blood and bone meal.

Once the pile has reached max-
imum height, keep it moist, turn it
occasionally, amd wait for your
‘black gold.’ Work it into your
flower and vegetable beds in the
spring or apply as a mulch around
trees and shrubs. And sow it
grows.
