The Friends of Stanley Park are most supportive of the original Vancouver Parks Board decision to close rush-hour access to the roads of Stanley Park. Our general position is that these roads should provide for local ac- cess and public safety, rather than for commuter routing. We feel that the original motion of the board achieved this and we were most encouraged by this decision. Having not seen the staff report, and rot knowing what, if any, role the traffic department and the police department may have played _ in the recommendation to re-open the southbound exit, we remain unconvinced that re-opening is the S. Africa article ‘naive’ Dear Editor: It was with great relief that I read the globetrotting article by Ted Tafel (Sept. 13) on South Africa. Here was J, laboring under the illusion that 26 million blacks were under the yoke of an‘ oppressive and brutal regime. So Amnesty In- ternational, the United Nations, our own government, the World Council of Churches et ai are completely wrong. Everything in the garden is rosy. Come on, North Shore News. You’ve been had. I’m astonished that you gave space to this shallow apology for apartheid. Only someone either dishonest or stupid - could have written such a whitewash (excuse the bad pun). The National Citizens Coalition is a blatantly right-wing organiza- tion whose slogan ‘‘More Freedom Through Less Government”’ is the cry of the backwoods primitive in a modern, complex, industrialized state. The naivete shines through the prose. If you must feature an article on South Africa, please find someone who hasn’t driven through leafy white suburbs wearing rose-colored glasses. Colin Smith North Vancouver The house that Wailis built Dear Editor: It was with interest I read the ar- ticle in the Friday, Aug. 25 edition WV Home floats away to new Bowen home by Maureen Curtis; however, it would have been nice if she had gotten the facts correct. In the article it said the house was built by W.W. Lefeaux and his wife Effie when in fact the house was built by my father and mother Wallis and Dorothy Lefeaux. Barry ‘W. Lefeaux Powell River DR. We would like to see a com- prehensive traffic study of the type suggested in your master plan. This plan should aiso consider the traffic consequences to the downtown Georgia-Burrard cor- ridor as well as the West End from traffic decisions made in the park itself. The Friends of Stanley Park will be working on a traffic plan which will address many other traffic concerns in the park, and stands ready to take part iin any public planning process suggested by the Board of Parks and Recreation. While we recognize the need to make decisions where clear and compelling needs are identified we remain unconvinced that this re- opening would benefit either Stanley Park or the Vancouver taxpayers. We urge the board to defer this matter until a study of traffic and parking needs in the park can be undertaken. It may well be the case that sclective additional regulations can alleviate concerns around both traffic and policing in the park. Ronald W.
