under the list of approved
substances must be cleared by the
Canadian Coast Guard.

But Cochran said the method
for checking commercial vehicles is
inadequate.

The ticket takers, he said, ‘‘do
the best job they can, bui they are
not there to inspect vehicles. They
are there to sell tickets.”’

Cochran said the system relics
on drivers telling ferry workers
what their vehicles are carrying
and provides no systerratic check
for dangerous goods.

Highways Minister Neil Vant
has said there will be no indepen-
dent inquiry into ferry safety.

But Cochran said the union will
continue to push for an investiga-
tion into the transportation of
dangerous goods, passenger
overloads and ferry maintenance
schedules.
