TIM aring 1940s Leonora Ames {J.R.'s mom, Bar- bara Bel Geddes) dreams of mar- rying money, but wakes up toa nightmare when Smith Ohlrig (Robert Ryan) turns out to be a paranoid neurotic in millionaire’s clothing. She tries to gain her in- dependence by leaving Smith and working for sympathetic Doctor BELL Quinada lames Mason), who is unaware of her marital status. The ~ . . two begin to fall for each other film reviewer until her husband tries to Trudy Kockenlocker (Betty Hut- ton) discovers that she’s pregnant after a raucus farewell party for departing soldiers, but she can’t remember who the father is. (The name Razkywazky is about all her foggy memory can produce.) She turns to her life-long pal, Norval jones (Eddie Bracken), for help. Now, the only thing that would make Norval happier than being accepted into the army, is to have Trudy notice hirn. Under the watchful glare of Bet- ty’s father (William Demerst), ner- vous Norval is about to become the happiest man in the world. Pretty daring for 1942 and still blackmail Leonora into remaining his wife. The fine acting is highlighted by Curt Bois as Ohlrig’s effete pun- ching bag, Franzi, whose favorite phrase is ‘Tough, dahling, tough.” Only a weak ending mars this film noir. The Trap **% (Karts Home Video) Unrated This taut B-film stars Richard Widmark as the ne’er-do-well at- torney forced to return home to help mob king Lee J. Cobb escape the law. Widmark’s father (Carl Benton Reid) is the town sheriff and their hilarious. strained relationship is shattered *** (Republic Home when he’s asked to turn a blind Video) Unrated eye. Even more unhappy is Wid- @ NCOUVER PARKS AND) fi mark's younger brother, Earl Holliman, a booze-hungry deputy racked with insecurities. Only Holliman’s wife, Tina Louise (prior to being stranded on Gilligan's island), is excited by her brother- in-law’s return. The action takes off when the bickering brothers escort Cobb across the hostile desert to the authorities, t guess they're right; you can never go home again. Sammy and Rasie Get Laid ** (Lorimar Home Video) Rated R And so does everybody else in this depress:ng yarn about a cruel Pakistani politician, Rafi (Shashi Kapoor), seeking asylum in Lon- don where he was educated. But the old haunts he fondly remembers have been replaced by the nightly riots of violent unem- ployed youths. His son, Sammy (Ayub Khn Din), is not taken in by the old man’s charm, but can’t resist the wealth his father dangles before him. Alienated from his daughter- in-law, Rosie (Frances Barber), and is still hilarious his old flame (Claire Bloom), Rafi is haunted by the ghosts of his vic- tims. Great title; shame about the film.
