Especially if the powers believe the opposite. American writer Bradley R. Smith got the shakes when he first became convinced that the Holocaust wasn’t what it is crack- ed up to be. And he tells us all about it in a fascinating beok call- ed Confessions of a Holocaust Revisionist, Part i. For 35 years, he recounts, he believed everything he had ever heard about the Nazi concentra- tion camps. ‘‘Not the shadow of a . wA4ie it ot ae Survivors’ stories are never resorts, and there were crematoria to dispose of the dead. In 1945 I inyself saw Bergen-Belsen. What is in question is whether the Nazis planned to murder all the Jews and whether they shoved them into gas chambers in order to do it. ‘‘Revisionists’’ say they didn’t, but anyone who argues the point is likely to be run out of town, put into a straight-jacket, threatened, prosecuted, or have his questioned, no matter how crude they may be. Elie Wiesel the professional Holocauster tells tales that make no more sense than the Jack and the Beanstalk story.’’ doubt had ever crossed my mind,”’ he recounts. Then he started reading the critical literature, and “intellectually, psychologically, something had to break.”” Bradley Smith is not a nut; nor was Paul Rassinier, the French in- tellectual and former concentration camp inmate who was one of the first to challenge the orthodox ver- sion of the Holocaust; nor is Pro- fessor Robert Faurisson, the French academic who has stuck to his guns in spite of being run through the courts for his beliefs; nor is Arthur Butz, the American academic who wrote the massively researched Hoax of the Twentieth Century; nor is David Irving, the British author who has now also . come to the conclusion that the tale of the 6,000,600 is a lie. It is not a question of whether there were concentration camps or whether large amounts of people died in them. Of course there were and of course they did. The victims were of many races and religions, the camps were net holiday shop put to the torch (something that happened to the revisionists’ publishing house in California). Burning at the stake comes next. Taking the Smith stance, in other words, is not conducive to puffing a quiet pipe. But a lot of people who take the trouble to read the literature cannot help but doubt the orthodox version of the Holocaust. As the author puts it: “It was easy to believe what everyone else believed and difficult not to. The believing took no energy, no courage, and no com- mon sense.”’ Small wonder, considering that the Holocaust Industry never dies. Read the papers, switch on the tube almost any night, and the story of the 6,000,000 will jump out at you. Every year, it seems, there is another TV extravaganza on the subject. One is running right now. Another is in the mak- ing. Another is always in the mak- ing. Survivors’ stories are never questioned, no matter how crude they may be. Elie Wiesel the pro- fessional Holocauster tells tales that make no more sense than the Jack and the Beanstalk story. But he is never challenged. Not by mainstream academics and jour- nalists, anyway. Why beg for trouble? Wiesel has claimed that the ground spouted ‘‘geysers of blood’”’ for months after people were executed at Babi Yar in the Ukraine, Which of course is a physical impossibility that Smith describes as his favorite Elie Wiesel story. He is equally sardcnic on the gas chamber stuff. How would it be possible, for example, to gas huge numbers of people in a chamber measuring 12’ by [2’, reportedly the size of the one at Trebiinka? The more one thinks about this matter, the greater become the doubts. After the war, I was work- ing in the British Zone of Occupa- tion in Germany. Thousands of Jewish survivors were in refugee camps, trying to get to Palestine, the U.S., or other countries. You can hardly go down the road these days without bumping into one of them. If Crazy Adolf was determined to wipe them all out, what held him back? Here is another querulous thought: if those who challenge this story are so wrong, why does the Holocaust Industry worry about them? Do we chase flat- earthers? Do we get into a froth if someone says California is north of Alaska? Smith’s book is available for $8 (U.S.) from Prima Facie, P.O. Box 931689-1, Los Angeles, California 90093. It’s not a heavy read. It is an often amusing walk through the valley of the shadow of doubt, and I am looking for- ward to Part 2@ BC Rail passenger traffic up NORTH VANCOUVER-based BC Rail has increased the number of passengers carried on its North- Vancouver-to-Prince-George mainline by more than 17 per cent this year over last. The railway estimates total pas- sengers carried this year on the line will be 94,000 compared with less Offer valid Fri., than 80,000 in 1987. One of the main reasons for the increase, according to BC Rail of- ficials, is the railway’s decision to offer a daily service between Lillooet and Prince George during the summer. “Word is getting around that it’s a nice way to see B.C.,’” BC Rail spokesman Barrie Wall said. The railway is anticipating its passenger total on the line wiil rise to 100,000 next year, which is almost double the number carried 10 years ago. - Wall said approximately 400 passengers, a new single train re- cord, will be riding north Dec. 23 on EC Rail.
