Back then, the bonds paid inter- est at a rate of 2.75 per cent. That rate was once as high as 19.5 per cent. Today, unmatured issues of Canada Savings Bonds guarantee an interest rate of between 6.5 and 10.5 per cent, depending upon the year of purchase and _ series number. Canada Savings Bonds go on sale each fall, and each issue guar- antees a minimum interest rate for its term. For example, the latest issue (Series 40), issued Nov. 1, 1985, offers 8.5 per cent interest during the first year, and a mini- mum of 6.5 per cent interest in subsequent years, unti! maturity in 1992, The term of a Canada Savings Bond is usually seven years. Some employers allow you to buy Canada Savings Bonds through a payroll deduction plan. You will have to pay interest on your outstanding balance when buying bonds this way, but that in- terest expense can be written off at ‘income tax time. It is also possible to buy Canada Savings Bonds by instalments, paid to a bank. In effect, what you will be doing is taking out a ‘‘loan’’ at a lower interest rate, to invest in something that pays a higher inter- est rate. The difference in the two rates is your profit. While Canada Savings Bonds usually pay a more attractive rate of interest than a savings account, they are almost as flexible. They can be cashed in for their face value at any time, and will still pay interest up to and inciuding the last complete month for which you held them, once you have held them for at least two months. So if you can get a better rate of return from a term deposit or guaranteed investment certificate, you can switch your money over with no penalty. (There may be s penalty, however, when cancelling an instalment purchase plan.) If enough investors start taking their money out of Canad. Savings Bonds, the federal governn.ent ups the rate paid by the bonds ty make them more attractive. Whi.e the rate may later be adjusted back down again, it is guaranteed ni-ver to fall below a set rate. Currently, two different types of Canada Savings Bonds are offered. ‘Regular interest’? bonds offer interest paid annually. Interest is calculated automatically, and is then either mailed to you as a che- guc on Nov. | of each year, or Is best deposited directly to yeur account. “Compound inteest’’ bonds reinvest the interest you earn each year, and pay interest on that in- terest.
