regularly as you have your
oil checked. This is especial-
ly important in summer
because hot weather can
have a Strange effect on tire
pressure. When a tire is
warm, the air expands, and
you can’t get a true reading.

THIS smart motorist checks
tire pressure with a pocket
size guage, knowing that
correct tire pressure and in-
flation will save him money.

Overinflation is also
damaging to tires, so be sure
the pressure does not exceed
the recommended pounds
per square inch (PSI) in-
dicated on the tire. Radial
tires always look as if they
need air, so many people
make the mistake of putting
too much air in them. That
can be an expensive mistake.
Proper inflation cannot be
overemphasized.

As we've said, the best
way to save money on tires is
after you buy them. Owners
who check their tires regu-
larly and correct problems as
they develop are rewarded
by thousands of extra miles
of use.

Here are some signs of
trouble to watch for:

°The tire is wearing on the
outside edge of the tread. A
sign of underinflation. Other
indicators may be a mushy
ride and a tendency for the
tires to ‘‘squeal’’ when going
around corners.
