AFTER MAKING 12 stops in I] cities and hearing 1,006
submissions, the federal government's commission on
equality rights is getting ready to write its report.

Capilano MP Mary Collins, in town last week for the se-
cond set of submissions in Vancouver, said the quality of
submissions ‘thave been very good. They've been quite in-

, Novative.’’

Collins is one of seven MPs on the all-party committee
studying hiring, pension, unemployment and retirement
policies with regard to discrimination on the grounds of race,
place of origin, color, religion, sex, age, physical or mental
disability.

The MPs include Patrick Boyer (PC), chairman of the
commission, Colleen Browes (PC), Maurice Trembley (PC),
Roger Clinch (PC), Sheila Finestone (Lib), Svend Robinson
(NDP), and Collins. The group is studying federal regula-

tions and policies with regard to section 15 of the Charter of
Rights. Section 15° is the section dealing with equality and
discrimination.

Collins and the committee have heard submissions from a
wide variety of interest and advocacy groups including na-
tional women’s organizations, national groups for the hand-
icapped, churches, lesbian and homosexual groups, civil
liberties groups, native Indian groups, seniors groups and
racial interest groups.

“When you see examples of Canadians being
discriminated against, it makes you angry. That is not our
concept of Canadian society and it’s surprising the practice
continues,’’ Collins said.

The report is due October 15 and the government has 120
days to act on it. Collins expects some of the more minor
recommendations to be acted on quite quickly.
