NORTH VANCOUVER ar-
chitect Ib G. Hansen won
the 1984 National Facility
Excellence Award, presented
by the Canadian Parks and
Recreation Association, for
his innovative design of the
Crescent Beach Lifeguard
Station.

Hansen became involved
with the project in 1981. It
was a controversial issue
because the area contains
both a popular public beach
and an established residen-
tial community which was
concerned about loss of
privacy, view and
neighborhood character.

Both the residents and the
municipality of Surrey real-
ized that a public beach fa-
cility was needed, so repre-
sentatives from both groups
formed a joint committee to
deal with the matter.

The award-winning struc-
ture contains a lifeguard of-
fice and first aid station, an
RCMP summer policing of-
fice, outdoor public shower
areas and drinking foun-
tains, public dressing rooms
and washrooms, storage for
lifeguard boats and equip-
ment, and public meeting
rooms.

The two-story brick and
wood building was com-
pleted in 1982, successfully
meeting municipal require-
ments and gaining the ap-
proval of local residents.
The masonry ground floor is
both vandal-proof and low
maintenance, and the wood
frame second floor has floor
to ceiling wrap-around glass
and large outdoor decks.

The upper roof area has
an active solar collection
system that supplies all the
hot water needs for the
public beach shower system.
It is totally cost effective
because peak use of outdoor
beach showers always coin-
cides with warm sunny days.

The cedar siding used on
the upper floor was finished
with a special mixture of
bleach and stain to resemble
the naturally weathered logs
on the beach Brick screen
walls assure maximum
privacy for nearby residents,
and landscaping to the
water’s edge carries out the
park-like setting.

The result ts a natural col-
ored, low scate building in
harmony with ats site and
neighborhood

University of British Colum-
bia, He worked as an ar-_
chitectural designer and pro-
ject architéct with several

beginning his North Van.

He was a guest lecturer in
environmental education at
Simon Fraser University
from 1970 to 1975, and he
was a founding member of
the team of biologists,
geographers, archjtects and
urban planners that designed
the course, which was the
first post-graduate course in
environmental education in
Canada.
