Union will shut down buses

Unless
talks
‘resume

THE INDEPEN-
DENT Canadian
Transit Union says it
will shut down _ bus
service for a full day
next week unless the
Metro Transit
Operating Company
agrees to reopen
negotiations.

The union announced
plans for a series of one-
hour work stoppages leading
to a 24-hour shut-down of
the system .a—week from to-
day Monday.

The shut-downs will be
called off if the Metro
Transit Operating Company
agrees to negotiations with
the transit umon -in_ the
presence of a negotiator.

The string of shut-downs
was to have started Tuesday
between 3 and 4 p.m. and to
continue Thursday with
buses pulling to the side of
the road for one hour
beginning at 7 a.m.

if no resolution to the
dispute is reached by next
Monday, the buses will not
run between 4 and 5 p.m. lf
the question of negotiations
remains unsolved by
Wednesday, the union will
shut-down the system at 4
a.m. and drivers will stay off
the job for 24 hours.

The announced plans to
bring the system to a tem-
porary halt are the tatest
steps in the union’s
escalating ‘‘unstrike’’, dur-
ing which drivers and
maintenance employees of
the transit’ Operating com-
pany have attempted to
pressure the company into a
contract. settlement without
overly-effecting transit users

outside mediator, acceptable
