LOOKING BACK AT 85

I don't know anything
about Nadine Stair of
Louisville, Kentucky except
that at the age of 85 she
wrote a poem that clicked.
Every little while someone
‘phones me or writes me ask-
ing if I know “that poem
written by that old lady
about what she'd do if she
had life to live over again.”
First, Pll pass on the poem to
you, then see if there's
anything to say about it.
Here it is:

IF 1HAD MY
LIFE TO LIVE OVER
I'd dare to make more
mistakes next time.
I'd relax, I would limber up.
I would be sillier than I

have been this trip.

I would take fewer things
seriously.
I would take more chances.

I would climb more moun-
tains
And swim more rivers.

1 would eat more
cream “

and less beans.

I would perhaps have more

actual troubles, but I'd
have

fewer imaginary ones.

You see, I'm one of those
people

who live
sanely hour

after hour, day after day.
Oh, [ve had my moments,
and,

if I had it to do over again,
I'd.

ice

sensibly and

have nothing else,
Just moments, one after
another,

instead of living so many
years

ahead of each day.
I’ve been one of those per-

never go anywhere
without a thermo-

meter, a hot water bottle,
a raincoat

and a parachute.
If I had it to do again, I
would

travel lighter than I have.
If I had my life to live over
I would start barefoot earlier

in the spring and stay that
way

later in the fail.
1 would go to more dances.

I would pick more daisies.

So said 85 year old Nadine
Stair.

I love it! She is not
whimpering about what she’s
missed. She's not weepingly
