A8 - Wednesday, June 8, 1983 - North Shore News Hi mailbox Dear Editor: British Columbians should take a close look at their MPs stand on the federal government's proposed changes in the Crowsnest Pass freight rates. So far, the Conservative members from British Columbia have stood by their party’s attempts to block any changes in the rate structure, and the NDP members have actively participated in their party’s highjack of Parliament over the issue. In short, if the farmers aren't forced to pay more to ship their grain, as the federal government is proposing, the railways will not be able to go ahead with their plans for major railway The Crow must go construction in B.C. Solving the ‘Crow dilemma” through = the passage of the legislation now before Parliament (but being stalled by the PCs and NDP) will result in direct railway investment of about $5.4 billion in British Columbia. That translatés to 87,000 person years of employment. The Beaver Tunnel project alone in Roger's Pass, will create 800 full-time jobs for the ap- proximately four years that it will take to build. The NDP and_ Tories should noz play politics with this legislation. The -prairie caucuses in both of these parties are dominating the “line” taken in Parliament: that is, that the Crow rate for shipping grain should be retained. These MPs are not doing any favours for British Col- umbia by attempting to pre- vent passage of this legisla- tion. And if they don’t stop their antics right now, Quebec interests might in- tervene to scuttle the pro- posed legislation altogether. British Columbia voters of all political stripes shouid send a strong message to ail members of parliament from B.C. saying that they do not want their MPs to play pohtics when it comes to British Columbia's economic future. Dear Editor: In Mailbox of your North Shore News of May 25th, Alderman Crist again ac- cuses the others on North Vancouver District Council of favouring big business with their taxation policies. Alderman Crist must be aware that the options available to Council are limited and should the for- mula: be selected to tax big business to the maximum, small business and industry in the District would be adversely affected at a time many are already suffering 1424; MARINE DRIVE NORTH VANCOUVE H BB ¢ 4 ° 3 3 ry < I ad & < vib its the effects of the recession. Alderman Crist gives the impression that business and industry are not paying their fa share of Municipal Taxes but he is obviously not the owner of business or in- dustrial property in North Vancouver. For 1982 in British Columbia, the average residential property owner paid in Municipal Taxes, $4.70 for each $1,000 of assessed value. The average industry paid $13.10 for every $1,000 and Business paid $9.40. Instead of economic improvement these policies have resulted in devaluation of the franc, riots, civil unrest and an economy teetering on the brink of col- lapse. North Vancouver District is fortunate in hav- ing a council which will not support these policies.
