The quota of 341 British Columbians aged 16 and 17 who will visit Ottawa during the next school year has not been filled. More students are being sought, especially boys, according to The Council for Canadian Unity, co-sponsor of the program with the federal and provincial governments. To date, female applicants substantially outnumber males. The Lower Mainland group includes three from Richmond, two from Kerrisdale, five from West Vancouver, one cach from East and North Vancouver, one from Delta, one from year olds will spend one week in Ottawa each year learning about the in- stitutions, laws, and government of the country. There is virtually no cost to the student except for a $25 registration. An ad- ditional $150 comes from local sponsorship by community organizations, schools or parents’ con- tributions, with the balance, estimated at $300, being provided by private and government contributions. During the week-long program, the young Canadians will be immersed in an atmosphere revealing the diversity in opportunities in this country im science and technology, natural resources and environment, arts and culture, law, the Canadian studies. There will be conferences, lectures, audio-visual presentations, case studies and group discussions plus guided tours to the Parliament Buildings, Supreme Court, National Arts Centre and other places of interest in the Capital Region. It is all designed to bring together young students who will bring their own special characteristics of regional, cultural and_ linguistic diversity, together with their individual attitudes and perspectives, for exposure and discussion with their peers. The Council for Canadian Unity considers this program to be an out- standing opportunity for young people to develop a greater understanding of Canada and of each other. The ultimate aim is to create a better understanding among people of all regions across Canada.
