My - young’ friend: -from Argentina has been and” gone, leaving all sorts of new impressions of Canada, seen through the eyes of a first- time visitor. He found our Canadian English much easier to understand that either the .American or British. - by Barbara McCreadie es I put him aboard the CP Air Skybus to Montreal last Friday morning. We tried to get him on any one of the tri- weekly flights to Toronto aboard Skybus but every flight through the month of © March was solidly booked. When we read in the paper that the temperature in Montreal was -27 degrees C., Pablo quickly lost his enthusiasm for Eastern Canada's mid-winter, but too late! Montreal flights were available up to the last minute. Pablo is, besides being a fully-qualified doctor, a licenced French teacher through the Alliance Francaise. He dreaded coping with French Canadian French! Although his English needs a lot of patience, he managed well, even the night we gave him a lesson on English profanity! In return, he taught me a couple of juicy Spanish expressions to be used in times of stress. Chinese food! Seven dollars, for three of us, left us stuffed and quite a doggy-bag collection on the table. The highlight of his visit was two days at Long Beach. We caught the 6:30 am ferry from Horseshoe Bay to Nanaimo. The three of us - Pablo, one of my daughters and I sailed forth in good old “Lemonade”. True to her usual quirks, she proceeded to “give-up” on all heating and defrosting systems before we left for Nanaimo. - Half-way to Tofino, she dropped her muffler on the road, leaving us sounding like a Sherman Tank. I used some of my newly-acquired Spanish profanity to explain just how low she’d sunk on a scale from one to ten. Long Beach, even in mid- _ winter is beautiful. The road is paved but I must caution drivers about the last sec- tion! When you see a sign that says “Avalance Area - Do Not Stop”, plan for about 30 km of hairy turns, mostly downhill. You'll be on the outside edge, looking down. By the time we hit this section, Lemonade had very few systems working. With the windows open to help clear the windshield, rain pelting down, no heat and no muffler, we were a sad sight. The first thing my daughter did when we arrived in our motel was to take a two-hour bath. Pablo headed for the beach, complete with umbrella. I set a pot of hot soup on the stove, reached for the CC and soda and a good book. We stoked up the fire and relaxed. Later we went for dinner at the “Schooner”. The restaurant is charming - with the prow of a boat forming the bar and cashier's desk. The food isn’t the greatest - and the prices are higher than an equavalent restaurant on the Lower Mainland. It is under recent “new management” which I hope will improve by the time the tourist season hits. Otherwise, save your money and use your motel kitchen. Due to the season, the fresh fish supply wasn't. Murdering crabs isn’t one of my talents - I hate the squeak they make when they hit the boiling water! We stayed atthe Pacific Sands Resort (Box 237 Tofino, phone 725-3322). It's old, comfortable and right on the ,beach. Some units have fireplaces. Ours had two bedrooms, kitchen, living-dining area, patio and cost $38 for three. This motel is perfect for families - includes a lounge with a television set and is fairly Spacious. If you get lucky, and can go without kids try the OCEAN VILLAGE BEACH RESORT! Just along the road, towards Tofino, it has a heated indoor pool, beautiful beach front and ali modern kitchen units. It’s units are smaller than Pacific Sands and I'd rather not take a family there, unless I were rich enough to afford a separate unit for the kids. Why spoil a_ beautiful honeymoon hideaway with a bunch of kids? To sum up: Take your kids to Pacific Sands. Take yourselves, for a second (or first) honeymoon to Ocean Village. Plan to do you own cooking in either place bring basics from home and rely on the local Co-Op store for groceries. There is a liquor store. I hope the fish, shop is open for business when you arrive! You'll be apt to find Brian and I there very soon - without the kids. Before I forget - if you have car trouble in Tofino (want to borrow Lemonade?), see “Happy Harry Tieleman” at the Esso Station. What a nice man! He wired Lemonade’s muffler back into position, checked her out with ap propriate warnings, and kept! us laughing the whole time. It’s worth your time just to stop for gas - he’s so funny. Better still, he’s honest! Although Lemonade'’s| muffler was past the point of no return, he spent half and hour wiring it together, just: to get us home. The total bill, inclusing a quart of oil BECAUSE IT’S HARD .
