The weekend stretches ahead, and you have no particular plans or appointments. How does this scene make you feel? Delighted? Anxious? Each of us reacts different- ly to solitude. Some look for- ward to this restorative ‘‘alone’’ time, while others are preoccupied only with filling up the ‘‘empty’’ hours until they are safely with other people once more. To them, being alone is synonymous with being lonely. Yet being alone and being lonely are really two different concepts. The dictionary defines ‘‘alone’’ as simply ‘‘apart from others,’’ a quite neutral concept. Loneliness, however, has a more negative connotation: a lack of in- timacy or closeness with others, or a feeling of dejec- tion from an awareness of be- ing alone. Creative, emotionally healthy people use their time alone to concentrate on thc three R’s: rest, reflection, and renewal. For them, being alone is a time to sort out ex- periences and reevaluate values and beliefs. In addition, they engage in enjoyable activities, such as painting, reading, or listening to music, that they may not have a chance to do at other times. ‘‘By all means use some time to be alone,’’ wrote the poet George Herbert; ‘‘Salute Thyself; see what they soul doth wear.’’ We can benefit from the wisdom of his words. When we feel lonely, or “‘empty,’’ we often. stuff ourselves in order to feel “‘full’’ again. Yet this behavior quickly develops in- to a vicious cycle. The more weight we gain, the less con- fidence we have to engage in social activities, and the more loneliness we have to cope with. Eventually we find ourselves spending more and more time alone with the caramel wrappers! Yet if we no longer per- ceive being alone as a negative experience, but rather as an opportunity for renewal, we have broken the cycle, and the compulsion to overeat will vanish.
