Dear Editor:

At risk of adding to the
tedium of life, [feel I must
comment on the recent
exchange of correspondence
regarding the provision of
recreation facilities.

When I moved to North
Vancouver in 1967 there were
two privately-owned facilities
offering such recreational
activities as swimming, skating
and curling and tennis, There
was also the recently complet-
ed municipal recreation centre
at Lonsdale and 23rd Street,
providing vicious subsidized
competition which ultimately
put one club out of business
and gave the other one a very
rough financial ride over the
years. :

the introduction of the public

the “good old days” when

Since coming to North
Vancouver [ have watched my
property taxes rise with each
passing, year, and with them
the proportion of my income
which goes to support the
empire builders. True, I have
the opportunity to make use
of the sauna or the exercise
equipment and because I do
not do so, those psople who
have been chosen to represent
me believe they have the right
to spend my money in any
way they please. Do I feel bit-
ter about this? Darned right I
do.

One writer accused fitness
clubs of using “pressure tac-
tics.” The pressure tactics I
fear are those applied by peo-
ple who are prepared to send
armed thugs to dispossess me

isfy their demands. On the
other hand I almost invariably
find that people who want to
sell me a product or service .
treat me with respect and dig-
nity.

‘Quite apart from the dubi-
ous morality of seizing my
money to be used to pay for
the recreational pursuits of
others, is the guestion of the
economic inefficiency of hav-
ing services provided by gov-
ernment when more practical
and efficient alternatives exist:
within the private sector.

North Vancouver District
has already experienced the.
consequences of being put
into receivership. There is a’
saying that those who do not
learn from the mistakes of the
past are condemned _to repeat .
them. We would do well to’
avoid making that particular.
mistake again. -
