Holland play in 1968. Davis
brought him into his band
and Holland moved to New
York. Holland can be heard

Holland, 54, first picked
up the bass guitar at age 13.

studied under James E.

Davis’ band. [t was a very tor-
mative time of my life and of

Braxton and Barry Altschul in
970.
Holland was named the

In 1989 Holland and his
quartet with Steve Coleman,

great musician gave me an
opportunity to really see the
process that he used in

Merritt, the principal bassist
of the London Philharmonic
Orchestra.

Holland's earlier jazz expe-
rience came in the London

to work with many greats. By
1966 he was playing with
peopte like Renny Wheeler
and John McLaughlin.
