Naval war remembered

VETERAN sailors
gathered May 7 at
Sailors’ Memorial in
North Vancouver.

The Battle of the Atlantic
was commemorated. The
Canadian Navy participated
..in what has become known as
longest conflict of the
Second World War. It lasted
2,073 days, trom Sept. 3,
1939 — the day the war
broke out — to May 8, 1945,
two days before Germany’s

unconditional surrender. The
Canadian loss alone, was
6,000 lives, 24 naval vessels
and 59 merchant ships.
Together with North
Vancouver City, the
Vancouver Naval Veterans
Association conceived and
built =a = memorial at
Waterfront Park, located just
west of the SeaBus terminal.
Tc was designed in the shape
of a compass rose, and lists all
Canadian naval ships that
were lost in the six-year

struggle. A commemoration
ceremony is held cach spring,
the first Sunday in May.
Veterans of all navies,
including merchant seamen,
with a representation from
Washington State, attended.
Among those invited to

attend was Bill Royds of

Langley, the winner of the
Distinguished Service Medal
for his role in locating and
sinking submarine U-247 in
a cat and mouse battle lasting
36 hours.
