After 23 years deep sea sail-
ing [ had never been this close
to the sca nor experienced
anything quite like this ride.
Sometime carly morning the
mizzen topmast staysail broke
ioase and the crew managed
to reef it before it tore away.
All through the night it went
on and during the nest after-
noon the wind managed to
top 55 knots, or toree 10 on
the Beaufort scale.

The waves were repetitive
for around five minutes being
similar in height and length
and then three large waves
would appear which would
push the ship over on a 50-
degree roll and 40-degree
pitching motion. The ride was
