Blood supplies
running very low

WITH the arrival of
summer and the finish
of the school year, peo-
ple have headed for the
beach and the moun-
tains — not for their
local blood donor clin-
ic.

Blood supplies in B.C. have
reached an extremely low level
and Canadian Blood Services
is urging donors to give blood
before they go on holiday.

“Of course, everyone
always looks forward to sum-
mer weather and holidays, I co
too,” said Craig Ivany, acting
centre director, Vancouver
Blood Centre.
“Unfortunately, accidents still
happen, surgeries must still
take place and cancer treac-
ments must still go on. This
means the demand for blood
doesn’t stop simply because
summer is hers.”

With Canada Day also

approaching, the Vancouver
Blood Centre must be pre-
pared tor extra demands on
the blood supply due to typical
increases in car accidents on
statutory holidays.

The next blood donor clin-
ic in North Vancouver is on
Wednesday, June 30 at Lions
Gate Hospital, Medical Day
Centre, located on 231 East
15th Strect. Clinic hours are
1:30 to 8 p.m. People of all
blood types are needed.

Healthy individuals
between the ages of 17 and 71
(first-time donors must be 60
years or under) with photo-
signature identification are
encouraged to attend this clin-
ic. Blood donors must weigh a
minimum of 190 pounds, not
have been + le?stist in the
past 72 hot.rs en. cata healthy
meal before ucaating.
