But some lucky North Shore karate kids have found an instructor who can introduce them to the real thing. Takayuki Sameshima, known as ‘Tak’ to parents and ‘sersei’ (teacher) to his students, is a fif- th-degree black belt karate in- structor who teaches at recCentre William Griffin in North Van- couver. Sameshima-sensei is not only chief instructor in Canada of the Tokyo-based Gima-ha Shoto-ryu Karate-do Association, but also head coach of the Canadian Na- tional Karate Team, and one of the most respected karate in- structors in the country. To compete in tournamerts at this level, membership of the Na- tional Karate Association is a must. William Griffin is currently the only recreation centre in North Vancouver offering karate classes recognized by the NKA. Since coming to Canada from his native Japan 15 years ago to teach karate here, Sameshima has established a successful karate club in White Rock. He plans to form a new club in North Van- couver, Introductory classes for adults will be offered in April, together with Esginner and advanced children’s classes. Registration begins today, March 1.
