20 - Wednesday, May 5, 1999 — North Shore News You de IT’S Mother’s Day this weekend. As a Mother myself 1 should be looking forward to my day, but I must tell you that Mother’s Day is always a chore for the women in. my family. The reason for this is that there are three generations of mothers in our clan: my mom, my nana, and me. And in order for us all to give and receive appropriate accolades for ovr measureless mainte- nance of the family fabric, we need about 2 week of Mother's Days In our family we subscribe to the seniority system for Mother's Day. My nana is 83 years old, still a lovely woman (although very short now) and in good health. As the most senior mother, she is the undisputed guest of honour at a big family dinner at my mom's house. It is a wonderful evening, with great feasting and much impassioned toasting by oth- erwise oblivious sons and hus- bands. But the best part of this Mother’s Day celebration is that for the last 15 or so years I’ve been let off the hook for making Mother's Day dinner for my mom, since she is clearly occupied making dinner for her mother. But obviously she too requires a little stroking now and then. “You never seem to have any time for your mother,” she said to me in 2 disgrun- ted tone on the telephone last week. “Other daughters have lunch with their moth- ers, and go shopping with them.” I was sure she was wag- ging her finger at me while she spoke into the receiver. “You know Pye been really busy lately, Mom,” I said lamely, “what with the book and the column and the kids and all”. “Surely vou can squeeze in a few minutes for your moth- er between golf and tennis,” she scolded. “Afier all, Mother's Day is just around the corner.” She's been a helluva good mom to me and she loves music, so to appease her I offered to take her to an Red Cedar Nominee: N.V. She happily accepted my invitation. On the night ef the con- cert she arrived at my house 10 minutes early (both she and my dad are chronically carly). 1 was in the bath, and called to her that ] would be down in five minutes. In thar time she pruned and watered nv parched plants, rearranged all the pillows on my chester- fields and chairs, and combed most of the knots out of my pussycat. T thought I heard her run the vacuum cleaner around while I was still upstairs, but she denied doing that. I did notice that the dishwasher had been emptied and the ironing was all done. As usual, she locked fan- tastic. My attire, on the other hand, apparendly required a little work. “You look like a biker chick wearing that black Ieather jacket,” she comment- ed, giving me the once over. “Change it. “And there’s something on your face,” she said, wetting a Kleenex with her spit and dabbing at my check. Orphetim theatre for the con- cert, which included a silent auction to raise funds tor the choir. Most of you know that items being sold via silent auction are displaved with sheets of paper for buyers to write their bids on. My mom was pretty excit- ed with the whole concepr, and she made sure she saw every auction item, and bid on anything that looked remotely interesting, All on my behalf, of course, as ] got roped into working behind one of the food tables. In fact, the ald dofl was so excited with the bidding that she barely paused to get a 7 Y PARENTAL GUIDANCE n’t need to bid for a mother’s drink. “My mouth is drier than a pepeorn's fart!” she laughed girlishly, just-as the auction tables were closing. “But f think we got what we want- ed,” she nodded, straighten- ing my collar and doing up the top button on my shirt. The rest of the evening was a terrific mix of music and entertainment, and it made me happy to be there with my mom, even when one of the choir members asked me if she was my sister. Just before it was time to leave, she took off for the auction tables to see how suc- cessful her bidding had been, returning with a huge grin on her face. “Good news, Shannic! We won everything we bid on!” A win indeed I thought, as J puiled our my cheque book to pay for the stuff thar I would, in all likelihood, be donating to the next fund raising silent auction I had tw attend. When she dropped me off at home, she thanked me for the evening, and as 1 stepped out of the car said, “Now straight upstairs and into bed you go, Shannie.
