32 - Sunday, November 3, 1996 ~ North Shore News Career program a non-starter AS a member of the graduating class of 1997, I have many questions, one of them being, “Why on earth do we have a program called CAPP?” The Ministry of Education, Skills and Training tells us that we are the first grad class to graduate with this wonderfitl “Career and Personal Planning” program, CAPP has three parts: personal develop- ment, carcer development (and planning), and a 30-hour work experience component. Last year was the first year we started this program, and atimy school we had a 45- ininute class every Wednesday in which we did activities that had absolutely nothing to do | We Need More Helpers!! | Please call if you are interested in helping our society | in any of the fallowing areas: computer Fundraising *Fostering *Administration activities \ pis? DORIS ORR swith planning our careers, Apparently there was more to CAPP than laid been explained. We explored a com: puter program called “Choices” which, by filling Out a questionnaire, gave usa list of occupations for which We were best suited. The choice that my computer sur gested for ime was captain of a fishing vessel. As it This was the only thing we did that had anything to do with planning our careers. When we first started this program in Grade 11, they tok us we needed 30 hours of work experience to pass the course and graduate, Toward the end of the year, the Ministry decided to postpone the 30 hours. Now they tell is we do need the 30 hours of work experience but not neces sarily with an employer. There Jre Hine ways wee can earn the 30 hours, from guest speakers, ficld ips oF conferences to classroom /community activi ues. L would really appreciate it ithe Ministry would make up its mind. Not only are they confusing me and everven¢e else, but they are alse starting to make me very angry. In my opinion, T feel CAPP ssstupid, pointless and a waste of time, especially if it's going to he taughe this way, | FOR 2 ADOPTION PLEASE CALL: Doris Orr 987-9015 NV SPCA 988-7484 WV SPCA 922-4622 Pets in Need 922-4298 [eae oe Eli Shep. Finding a job gets tougher every day. We need to have skills and the ability to further our education, Every year the fees increase tor post secondary education, which makes it harder for stu- dents te attend, Once vou yet the editeation, vou are told you either have too much experi- ence for the jub, or not enough experience. You may lw end up having a job you don’t like, or it has nothing to do with what vou took in college.
