Scotsmen used to tank up on

manufacture, the English had little
interest in “whisky” until they'd

obtaining fine French brandy

Highland elixir and in 1823 the first
official permit to distill was issued
to The Glenlivet.

Pure pot-distilled single malts
which give blended Scotches their
character are much in vogue and are
now as pricey as the cognacs they
supplanted.

Highland Park 12-year-old single
malt (Orkney) 43% ale. by vol-
ume $57.95

Rated by whisky connoisseurs as
“the finest Scotch whisky in the
world” (only The MacCallan com-
pares), it’s priced accordingly.

Dark as a crofter’s cottage. with
a smoky bouquet of sea- -salted peat
so deeply evocative it demands to
be reverently inhaled from aballoon §

snifter. More sacrament than drink.
