88 - Friday, October 28, 1994 - North Shore News Rent hike protested OCCUPANTS OF some of the municipally owned cab- ins on Hollyburn Ridge are concerned aboul proposed rent hikes that would increase the annual cost of a lease to $275 in 1994 (a 21% hike) and up to $1,000 in 1998, Several of the renters came to the Oct. 17 meeting of West Vancouver District Council to argue against the increases and asked for fur- ther time to respond. Counci! members emphasized that their motion that night was to refer the report to the efenters (memuers of the Hollyburn Ridge Association) and the Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission for comment. As a result of concerted purchasing efforts over some years, the municipality cur- rently owns [26 of the Hollyburn cabins focated at an elevation council wishes to see restricted to public use. Since the 1970s, Coun. Pat Boname explained, there has been a freeze on any new construction in the area and restrictions on repairs to existing cabins. The parks and recreation department has — been involved in wording a new agreement between the municipality and the Hollyburn Ridge Association of cabin occupants. Robert Tapp. who has been using one of the cabins for several decades, potted out that the cast of leasing a cabin was $5 per year in 1937 and $15 per year in 1944. He also said today's cabin renter does not enjoy the advantages of a well main- tained trail, access to tele- phone and first aid and a nearby ranger, as they did in the past. Coun. Boname explained that the rent hike was intend- ed to have those who enjoy the use of occupying some- thing on public land pay more for the privilege. Less than 20% of the renters are from West Vancouver.
