22 —~ Sunday, November 6, 1994 ~ North Shore News Smelt catchers and swimmers squabp THE ENJOYMENT of warm sum- mer evenings at Dundarave Beach in West Vancouver became a miat- ter of some competition and con- sternation this year between swim- mers and smelt fishermen. WEST VANCOUVER DISTRICT COUNCIL By Maureen Curtis West Vancouver District Council discussed, Oct. 24, differ- ent ways to try and resolve contlicts that arose between people on the beach. Although council has had a poti- cy permitting net fishing at Dundarave since 1993, the number of smelt fishermen has increased in recent times, according to Coun. Rod Day. He was concerned that smelt fishermen have begun to dominate the beach to the point where swim- mers risk becoming tangled in the nets. “They are ruining the relaxed family atmosphere of this beach and will be driving people away.” said resident Ralph Caroler, who wrote the Parks Department twice this year to complain. olving a p He suggested that all fishing should be entirely prohibited west of Dundarave Pier during July and August. Parks and Recreation Director Kevin Pike noted that it is the per- ception of some swimmers that fishermen are not entitled to be on the beach, while some fishermen seem to feel they are entitled to use the entire beach to anchor their nels. In his report to council, Pike said that there have been relatively few problems. He said these have occurred between rather small groups of peo- ple. Council’s policy permits net fishing in the area as long as it does not unduly interfere with public swimming. The district's authority over fishermen on the beach is limited, however, such that harvesting of sea life is actually the domain of the Federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO). Holders of vaiid licences are entitled to fish the waters off dis- trict parks, beaches and wharves. “These activities are part of the diversity of activities chat distin- guish our waterfront parks..." Pike concluded in his report to council. treatment for While Pike suggested the erec- tion of information signs at che beach, Day thought signs would be soamuch “visual pollution.” | PERSONAL INJURY Free Initial Consultation Douglas W.
