By ELIZABETH COLLINGS News Reporter “I always said I wanted to retire while I had my health,” said O'Dell, The 58-year-old North Van- couver resident says the timing is right for retirement both in terms of the hospital’s plans as well his own. ; LGH has nearly completed a master plan, started three years ago, that will establish the hospi- tal’s direction for the next five to 10 years. And O'Dell wants to see through the completion of the plan, slated to be presented at the hospital’s June 20 annual general meeting, 10 days before he retires. “It’s sort of a good time to make the break and let someone come in and do the implementing rather than do it in the middle of the change,’’ O’ Dell said. ; Retirement also fits with O’Dell’s plans to travel extensively with his wife, Betty, to the South Wednesday, June 20, 1990. But O’Dell’s career won't stop when he leaves LGH: he’ll put his years of experience in the health care field to use as a part-time freelance consultant. During his term at LGH, O'Dell has been in charge of admission, financial and information services as well as institutional planning and materials managment. O'Dell started his career at LGH in 1971. Since then the hospital has had three hospital presidents, and its full-time equivalent staff has in- creased to 1,550 from 1,100. But O'Dell said the attitude at the hospital has been consistently positive. *‘There’s a great group of people around here, interested in what they’re doing, and who realize their responsibilities to the com- munity and work damn hard to do it.”’ In the past 20 years, O’Dell said LGH has strengthened its ties with the community, pointing to pro- grams such as the diabetic day-care and rehabilitation day-care units. NOMINATIONS OF MEMBERS TO THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS The Annual General Meeting of the North & West Vancouver Hospital Society will be held on There are four positions on the Board to be filled by election on the night of the Annual General — two positions Nominees must be members in good standing of the Society. The 1975/80 services expansion further strengthened LGH’s am- bulatory services, by adding $0 per cent to existing space at LGH, providing expanded emergency, diagnostic, critical care, am- bulatory care and support services. Although funding has always been a struggle, O'Dell said 1982, in which the Social Credit restraint program was instituted, was the harshest year. ‘*That was when the government cut back our operational funding by 10 per cent, which meant laying off 10 per cent of our staff. That was a very upsetting time par- ticularly at LGH because we pride ourselves on. being more efficient for dollars spent,’’ he said. But O'Dell is confident that the hospital is in better financial shape now. “*There’s some regrets about leaving,’’ he said. ‘On the other hand, you like to think you con- tributed something while you've been’ here and let some other younger kid come and have a kick at the can.” 231 East 15th Street North Vancouver, B.C.
