Writer faces

dilemma

over

crediting ex-pals

DEAR MISS MANNERS — While I was writing my first
book, which has now been accepted for publication, I
recieved a great deal of assistance from a number of people,
all of whom I would like to acknowledge inthe beginning of
the book. I realize this will be impossible, and so I am
figuring out 2a diplomatic way to cover everyone without
offending those whose names I do not specifically mention.

Since the book was accepted,
however, both people, who are
friends with each other, have
become very angry at me and have
requested that I never speak to
them again. The cause of their
anger is unrelated to the book and
is bused on a misunderstanding
that they refuse to give me the op-
portunity to clear up. I have been
hurt by their sudden and complete
rejection, but have complied with
their request and am not in touch
with either.

1 do not know what book-
acknowledgment etiquette calis
for. Were E still on speaking terms
with these people, [ would not hes-
itate to thank both by name. Since
they wish to forget that I exist,
however, perhaps it woutd be more
appropriate to avoid mention of
either of them. This is what my
friends tell me. But Lami not con-
vinced. After all, the help they
gave me was enormous and occur-
