16 - Friday, November 25, 1988 - North Shore News on’t get burned buying firewood WHEN BUYING firewood, you should know how it’s measured. In Canada, firewood is usually sold by the cord. A cord equals 128 cubic feet of stacked logs either whole or split. It’s a good idea to check the quantity of wood you receive by taking time to stack and measure it yourself soon after delivery. Pile the logs neatly and in the same direction. The term roundwood refers to logs that have not been split. Roundwood is usually cut into four-foot or eight-foot lengths. A stack of roundwood in a four by four by eight-foot pile with in- dividual logs of similar lengths is equal to one cord. Split wood is usually cut into 16-inch lengths. Ef it’s stacked four feet high, you require a pile 24 feet long to make one cord. You'll get better value for your money if you buy split fire vood. When piled, large air spaces occur between whole logs, but there is less space when wood is split and stacked. A lot of firewood is sold as “*face,’’? ‘‘stove,’’ i “*bush,”’ ‘‘short,’’ or ‘‘apartment’’ cords. These ‘‘face’’ cords usually measure eight by four feet by 16 inches stacked. These are not legally defined and usually contain much less than a full cord. A dealer may sell firewood in smaller amounts, such as one-third or one-half of a full cord but it’s up to you to ensure that you receive what you pay for. If you believe you have received less firewood than you paid for, you should discuss this with the seller. If you're still dissatisfied, contact the nearest office of Con- sumer and Corporate Affairs Canada, Weights and Measures Division. mirror closet doors © wire storage systems =e ° wall bed : \ © Do-it-yourself or installed | }Lf © Free in-home estimates 1093 Marine Dr., NV. 986-4263 = Gardeners sought ARE YOU interested in spending time helping gardeners with their gardening problems?
