helps many small businesses

THE FEDERAL Business
Development Bank’s new invest-
ment banking service is rapidly
turning into a major force to help
new businesses achieve high
growth potential even when they
don't meet normal private sector
financing criteria.

nized during Small Business Week
across Canada this week, Oct. 19
to 25,

The service fills a significant gap
— not so much by investing
FBDB’s own capital, although it is
empowered to do so, but especially
by acting as a go-between with

private sector sources of financing. .

Services offered include direct
purchase of minority ownership
interest, underwriting of private
placements, joint ventures, syn-
dication of proposals to other ven-
ture capitalists and financial in-
stitutions as well as assistance in
mergers and acquisitions.

In the last fiscal year, by work-
ing with the private sector to seek
out additional sources of equity
financing, the bank succeeded in
attracting $83.7 million in private
