NEW FIELD READY FOR THE NEW YEAR Kinsmen Stadium nears completion THE FATE OF Kinsmen Stadium’s field is up to nature now, says North Vancouver assistant engineer Hugh McKay. Reconstruction of the playing surface, which began carly this spring, is almost complete. The field was dug up and replaced with a 12 to 18-inch sand base. An improved drainage and irrigation system was also install- ed. Once fertilization and planting js complete, city and sports en- thusiasts alike, wiif have to wait at least until Jan. 1987 before the new field can be used. LONG ROOT GRASS “The new sand field requires grass with Jong roots that can re- cover quickly after use,’’ said McKay. ‘‘And we have to allow the grass to grow to full maturi- ty.” The city elected to replace the old Kinsmen field with the new sand turf construction after three sand turf fields at Loutet Park proved a durable combination. The field replacement will cost the city an estimated $150,000.
