Through continuous develop- ment and testing around the world, the modern passenger tire lasts’ longer, corners and stops better and makes a litre of gas go further than ever before. More important, they are paramount to safety and to economical vehicle operation. Assuming that tires will look after themselves, however, is a common mistake. More than any other major component, tires re- quire constant monitoring in order to deliver their maximum poten- tial. Inflation pressure is still the key factor controlling a tire’s potential performance — yet its maintenance is frequently overlooked. Optimum tire perfor- mance can only be obtained by maintaining. correct inflation pressure, However, according to surveys by Transport Canada, as many as 62 per cent of all tires on passenger vehicles are underinflated, which can lead to premature wear, poor handling roadholding, and in- creased fuel consumption. There’s no substitute for a con- scientious check of all tires, preferably once a week. Don’t rely just on eyeballing the tires — bulging sidewalls are char- acteristic of today’s radial-ply tires even when they are properly in- flated. Use a good gauge and check the pressures when the tires are cold. After driving for more than three minutes or more than one mile, the tires warm up and air pressure will increase the pressure by roughly 4 psi. Take this into account when checking the tires, i.e., if the recommended pressure is 32 psi, it should read 36 psi when the tire is warmed up. The correct reading for your car will be listed in the owner's manual and most times you'll be given two sets of figures: one for fully loaded and another if you do most of your driving alone or with one passenger. Check for wear aiso. Too much wear in the centre of the tire can indicate as tire is consistently - overinflated. Too much wear on shoulders underinflation. Modern tires make it easy to know when they need replacing. themselves with built-in tread wear indicators.
