Keep car cool

MAY IS CAR Care Month,
and the hot days of summer
are coming on fast. If you
want to keep cool in your
car, now is the time to check
out your air conditioner.

Gates Canada Inc., a ma-
jor manufacturer of
automotive belts and hoses,
has the following do-it-
yourself suggestions for
avoiding A/C problems.

You can start by turning
on your air conditioner for
five minutes each week, even
in winter. This is very im-
portant. Running it weekly
circulates. lubricating oil
within the system to prevent
the various seals from drying

‘proper tension. Pay close at-
tention td the belt going to

the air conditioning com-
pressor. Look for signs of
wear, fraying, separation,
glazing, and so on. Replace
the belts as required.
Regardless of visual condi-
tion, if the car is four years
old, replace the belts, Gates
says. If they are twin belts
(twin belts on the same
pulleys) replace them as a
matched set.

When checking belt ten-
sion, use a guage made for
that purpose. This handy
tool is not expensive and can
be found at most auto parts
stores. Correct velt tension is

_very important. Loose belts
vslip, waste power and

generate excessive heat. Heat
hardens a belt causing it to
crack and break premature-
ly. Also, heat may be
transferred from the’ pulley

to the accessory drive shaft
and burn up the bearing
lubricants.

The next step requires a
thermometer. Start your
engine and air conditioner.
After it has been running for
10 to 15 minutes, close all
the doors and windows, and
check the temperature. Put
your thermometer as close to
the evaporator as possible. It
is usually in a vent on the
right side of the car near the
glove box. It should register
1° to 6.6°C (34° to 44°F). If
the output is too warm, have
your mechanic test the sys-
tem.

Other than running it
weekly and periodically ad-
justing the V-belts, your air
conditioning system does not
require routine maintenance.
