The awards are presented each year to five Canadian athletes and or teams, male or female, competing in any sport at the amateur level. This as the first vear 9 of competition The winners will be an- nounced, and honored, at a dinner at the Hilton Harbour Castle Hotel, Toronto, on the evening of Thursday, April 26 The semi-finalists, selected by a jury of 12 prominent Canadian sports journalists, representing both print and electronic media and every region of the country. include seven individual athletes and three teams The individuals, in alphabetical order, are Alex Baumann, of Sudbury, On- taryo. swimmer, Todd Brooker, of Paris, Ontano, Alpine skier. Lyan Chor nobryuy of Bare d'U'rte, Quebev. modern pentathlete, Willie DeWitt, Grande Five Canadian best chosen Prairie, Alberta, boxer; Rick Hansen, of Vancouver, Wheelchair athlete; Shawn O'Sullivan, of Toronto, box- er; Dave Steen, of Toronto, decathlete. The three teams are: Canada's national men's basketball team; Canada's women's field hockey team, and; Canada’s synchronized swimming team Others receiving at least one vote from the judges in- cluded six individual athletes and sia teams. The individuals were Horst Bulau, ski jumper: Mike Butler, badminton: Sylvie Daigle, speed skating: Pierre Harvey, cross-country skiing: Anne Ottenbrite, swimming; and twin sisters Sylviane and Patricia Pontous, triathletes.
