Firemen go to the birds

A COCKATOO § which
escaped from its owner’s
home had firemen ladder-
climbing up a tree at 463
East First Street in North
Vancouver Monday af-
ternoon.

But the bird proved too
elusive for the firefighters.
As they raised the aerial
ladder the cockatoo moved
further in the tree “and we
couldn't effect a rescue,’ said
Chief Dick Hallaway.

At that stage a fire call
came in to Saskatchewan
wheatpool and the crew had
to leave the bird to its new-
found freedom.

Whereas the fire

department doesn't go to the
birds too often, when it gets
distress calls it doesn't shrink
from duty.

“We can’t fool around you
know,” said Hallaway.

Cost of dying up in W. Van
