Dear Editor: My reaction to letters such as written by Miss Eileen Scott, (Wed., Oct. 27) is one of deep frustration and worry. It is indeed a source of frustration that people such as Miss Scott, blessed with a generous talent to articulate, base their opinions on romantic nostalgia, rather than on the reality of what the present day government is determined to impose. The facts are that in order to manage the world of the future, our children’ will need vast resources of knowledge and = un- derstanding. To imagine that our children can plan for, maintain and direct the complex world of tomorrow, for themselves and for their families, with a “good old fashioned education” is pure folly. Alone, the “three Rs” of the Little Red School House, sufficient for our grandparents, will not equip our children to successfully fulfill the fr i but exciting responsibilities ahead. An education based on a “Dick and Jane” mentality, which does not expose our children to the vast and varied facets of our Niv Nv who wish to invest in the future to examine the motives of all candidates for school trustee in the up coming elections.
